[current and future programs]
SSF accomplishes our mission by developing and implementing projects and programs that fall into three distinct program areas: education & awareness, networking & support and recognition & inspiration.
education & awareness
buzz campaigns | 'Buzzes' are our favorite way to raise awareness around a sustainable style issue in a fun, postive, cheap and easy way. We simply set out to create a 'buzz' around an issue such as organic cotton. For this we might go shopping at a mall one day and ask salespeople in each of the stores if they have anything made with organic cotton. We know that most don't and that even those that do have items with organic cotton don't even realize it. Regardless, by the end of the day we do create a lot of buzz along the way.
element events | Building on the successful WATER FIRE EARTH events held in Seattle in 2002, SSF will now add AIR and SPIRIT and takes the events international. More of a 'global awareness party' than a formal meeting, each year one of the five Element Events will take place in a different city around the world to focus attention on both local and international sustainability issues. EARTH will take place in NY and focus on food; AIR in LA focusing on air pollution; FIRE in Auckland highlighting global warming and ozone issues; WATER in Venice addressing water pollution and overfishing; and SPIRIT in Beijing in 2008 in association with the XXIX Olympiad to celebrate how the human spirit is inspired by nature. Dates for other Element Events are yet to be determined.
SASS Magazine | Our seasonal online magazine, showcasing the best in sustainable lifestyles and sustainable living.
stylesheet newsletter | A chapter by chapter monthly newsletter with the latest news on sustainable style.
YO!SSF | YO!SSF is our youth outreach program. Instead of going to the traditional science classes to talk environmental issues, we go to home ec, art and business classes to show students the opportunities in sustainability, particularly in integrating sustainability into their own personal lifestyle choices.
networking & support
afterglows | SSF's version of a 'post party'. Essentially networking events associated with industry specific trade shows, conferences or other special events such as NY fashion week, AIA conferences or a movie release.
PALS | The Peer Alliance for Leadership in Sustainability (PALS) is a city-by-city network of style and design professionals that are actively integrating sustainability into their work.
strategy salons | SSF staff and industry specific experts work with style professionals to improve and expand their businesses in ways that have economic, as well as social and environmental value using Triple Target Sustainability.
sustainablity 101 | An introductory workshop for style professionals wanting to learn more about sustainability.
recognition & inspiration
ossa awards | The Outstanding Sustainable Style Achievement (OSSA) Awards, held each spring, are an annual awards ceremony similar to the Oscars that will highlight outstanding achievements across the many and diverse style industries. An evening of cross-industry awareness, inspiration and recognition.
best dressed environmental list | An annual list of high profile people that not only look good, they use their positions to do good.
