IKEA has finished completely phasing out all use of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) toxic flame retardants in their fun, funky and functional furniture. PBDE's, a type of brominated fire retardant, have been shown to be stubbornly persistent in the environment, accumulating in the fatty tissues of animals and humans. They also cause neurological damage and learning disabilities in children and can cancer in adults.
