Editor's note...

First...A VERY BIG THANK YOU! to all of you out there that donated and/or became members of SSF during our first ever membership drive and annual campaign, Red October. We are so pleased with the results and psyched to get out there and do even more great things including launching our youth program YO!SSF and getting started on the Sustainable Design Hall of Fame. If you haven't yet made a donation or become a member, don't fret...it's never too late to join/donate, just surf by our support page for more information on the many ways you can help SSF out. SASS Magazine, the OSSA Awards, the Seattle Stylesheet and all of the other great resources we provide are only possible because of your generous support. Snaps to you!

Next...I'm just finishing up this Stylesheet at 11:00pm on Wednesday night. Yeah, I know, WAY late...but that's what happens when you start a nonprofit. Sarah Mclauchlan's video of World on Fire just came on and I was left breathless. I sang, I danced, I smiled, I cried. If you haven't heard it or seen it, you're in luck...it's up on her website www.sarahmclachlan.com. I am now totally psyched and inspired to wake up tomorrow and make a little change in the world. Hope you are too after hearing/seeing it.

Now, on to the November issue of the Stylesheet. It's cold out there! Fall has arrived in the Emerald City and many of you [especially Kerry supporters] are feeling that northwest nesting feeling in a big way. You wanna find a comfy, cushy, snug spot to just sit and contemplate things for a while. In this issue of the Seattle Stylesheet we've tried to highlight some places and things to do that fulfill that nesting instinct.

As always, if you have a question, comment or suggestion for the next stylesheet, or you'd like to become a stylesheet sponsor, we'd love to hear from you. Email us at or give us a ring at 206.324.4850.

Natural Selections...looking fabulous, living well

  • Greener Lifestyles | Hot, hot, hot. The new website for Ballard's amazing Greener Lifestyles store is out of this world. The site (and store for that matter) is chock full of style AND sustainability. www.greenerlifestyles.com
  • 1200 Bistro | When you need a warm cozy night out, let us suggest you start with 1200 Bistro on Capitol Hill. With organic beef from Vashion Island, local produce and dairy products and a stunning interior it's just what the doctor ordered to cure those Seattle fall blues. www.1200bistro.com
  • Seattle Public Libraries | There's nothing like spending an afternoon exploring the stacks at your local library. If you haven't been to a public library, you might just be surprised the amazing resources available nowadays. And the new Central Library in downtown Seattle is a welcome addition to Seattle's library family. With award winning design and a green building galore it's the perfect hangout for any Seattleite of style and substance. www.spl.org
  • Coffee Messiah | And now for something completely different. There are few cafes in the city with as strong of a 'style' statement at Coffee Messiah on Capitol Hill. You'll see it all here, from goth to grey pinstripes. With their famous vegan, organic brunch, Peace Coffee and one of the strongest commitments to community and the environment around, they're a favorite of ours. Plus they have the biggest apple scone we've ever seen. www.coffeemessiah.com
  • Crossroads Trading Co. | Second hand shopping can be fun and it can be frustrating...going through racks and racks of great finds that don't quite fit. Luckily, Crossroads Trading Co. has come to the rescue. THEY'VE done the racks for you and gathered some of the greatest second hand stuff around...all sized and ready to try on. www.crossroadstrading.com

Quick Picks...doing good

  • Food Lifeline | Thanksgiving is a time when many of us go out and volunteer in local foodbanks. A great place to start this year is Food Lifeline. With 250 food banks to staff and support they've got a place just for you. www.foodlifeline.org
  • Woodland Park Zoo | You might think that fall and winter are a slow time at our local zoo, but there's actually a lot of work to be done both in working with the public and with the animals. Get in touch with you wild side and volunteer at Woodland Park Zoo this winter. www.zoo.org
  • Elder Friends | Thanksgiving is also a time when we think a lot about our family, friends and community. If you've got a little extra time this fall, why not help end isolation and loneliness amoung older adults. Adopt a grandparent, share stories and brighten somebody's day. We can all learn a thing or two from those who have truly "been there, done that". www.elderfriends.org

  • Nov 7 | Santiago Calatrava | That's right, one of the worlds visionary designer is coming to town. An exhibit of Calatrava's work will be at the Henry Art Museum through November 21st, but Calatrava himself will actually lecture at Kane Hall at 7:00pm on November 2. www.henryart.org
