BMW Opens the World's First Green Paint Shop
May 11, 2006
BMW recently started using recycled methane gas generated by a nearby landfill to provide energy for its paint shop at the manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, SC. The paint shop is estimated to use nearly half of the energy on the assembly line.
The project will save BMW at least $1 million per year, and diverting the gas from landfill will save 17,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, roughly equivalent to driving a car around the world 4,300 times -- more than 100 million miles.
