Umbrella Inside Out

SSF is happy to be co-sponsoring Umbrella Inside Out, the first design competition organized by TreeHugger.com in collaboration with I.D. Magazine. The competition is looking for either an innovative, Cradle-to-Cradle(R)-type umbrella design or a women's couture garment fashioned from old umbrellas.

This suave little bag is made from abaca, which is derived from a variety of the banana plant; while the banana is valued for its fruit, the abaca is cherished for the fibers that come from its stalk. These fibers are removed to make fabric, which is totally hand processed from fiber extraction to weaving.
