Sir Richard Branson Offers $25 Million to Solve Climate Crisis
February 9, 2007
Sir Richard Branson is offering $25 million to whoever can find the best way of removing significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Earth Challenge Prize is looking for a method that will remove at least one billion tons of carbon dioxide per year from the atmosphere.
Flanked by Al Gore in London, Sir Richard said humankind must realize the scale of the crisis it is facing. "The Earth cannot wait 60 years," he said at the news conference. "I want a future for my children and my children's children. The clock is ticking."

How to Absorb CO2 by the Billion Tons

At present, nature's way of absorbing this gas is largely by the vegetable plancten at sea. True, the land-based vegetation helps too, but this process has it limits due to a lack of water.

To improve the ability of the plancten to absorb this gas, we should do a number of things to aid it:
1. fertilize the plancten at sea with what ever nutrients will help it to grow,
2. Do research on existing forms of plancten in order to help develop strains that are most effective in their CO2 absorption
3. Since fish and whales eat plancten, develop the fishing and whaling preservation organizations and farming industry so as to not only grow more food but also to store on average, over the creature's life-span, more CO2 in their bodies. Thus leaving room for the growth of more plancton etc.
