This Old House: Renovating from Old to Green
March 30, 2007
This Old House, PBS' seminal home improvement and remodeling show, has begun its first-ever green renovation. The show is renovating a 1926 Craftsman bungalow in Austin, Texas, adding two bedrooms and a bathroom to the home to accommodate the homeowners' growing family, using sustainable materials wherever possible.
The renovation looks to be doing a pretty good job of considering the current building and not simply gutting the house and turning it into a hulking home with a few green features; the compact house was built to use natural air flow, high rooflines, and deep overhanging eaves to keep the summer heat at bay without air conditioning. Features like photovoltaic cells on the roof, rainwater collection for irrigation, spray-foam insulation, recycled-glass tile and countertops, and formaldehyde-free wood composites are just some of the resource-saving strategies and eco-friendly materials planned for the project.

Burger King Pledges to Buy Cage-Free Food
March 29, 2007
Burger King, the world's second-largest burger chain, announced earlier this week that they'd begin buying cage-free eggs and pork. The goal for the next few months, Burger King said is for 2 percent of its eggs to be "cage free," and for 10 percent of its pork to come from farms that allow sows to move around inside pens, rather than being confined to crates.
The company said those percentages would rise as more farmers shift to these methods and more competitively priced supplies become available. While Burger King’s initial goals may be modest, food marketing experts and animal welfare advocates said yesterday that the shift would put pressure on other restaurant and food companies to adopt similar practices. "I think the whole area of social responsibility, social consciousness, is becoming much more important to the consumer," said Bob Goldin, executive vice president of Technomic, a food industry research and consulting firm. "I think that the industry is going to see that it’s an increasing imperative to get on that bandwagon."

The Planet Takes Revenge (in the Movies)
March 16, 2007
The NY Times takes a peek at a handful of upcoming films that features a new kind of victim: the planet. No matter how far-fetched the stories and plot-twists get, the villian remains constant: it's all of us. From "The Simpsons Movie," to "Transformers" and "Avatar", the planet will be fighting back.
Says the article, "That an environmental consciousness should be slipping into the film industry’s prospective blockbusters is not surprising in an era when Al Gore and friends have picked up an Oscar (and hefty box-office returns) for their global-warming documentary, 'An Inconvenient Truth,' and when the debate it fed has largely slipped its partisan moorings. "'With this thinking all around, it’s obviously leaking into the popcorn movies,' Roberto Orci, the co-writer with Alex Kurtzman of the action-oriented 'Transformers,' said of the environmental ethos."
