Sustainable Style Foundation Announces Nominees for the 2005
Outstanding Sustainable Style Achievement (OSSA) Awards
Nonprofit organization helps promote sustainability as the most exciting and important style innovation of the 21st century
Seattle, WA—March 28, 2005—The Sustainable Style Foundation (SSF) announced today the nominees of its 2nd annual Outstanding Sustainable Style Achievement (OSSA) Award program to be honored at the LOHAS 9 Forum on April 27 at The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina Del Rey, California. Ten winners will be selected and announced from among more than 60 nominees at the special ceremony. Three premier award winners also were pre-announced today to recognize leadership in their respective fields. These winners are Aveda Corp. (Vision & Innovation), Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins (Outstanding Public Expression), in addition to Audrey Hepburn (Style & Substance).
All nominees and winners will be featured on SSF’s online magazine, SASS, available at sustainablestyle.org which serves its members as the ultimate resource guide of popular culture and personal lifestyle choices addressing the many pressing social and environmental challenges facing our world.
“The OSSA Awards recognize outstanding social and environmental efforts across style industries that help us all ‘look fabulous, live well and do good’?, said Rebecca Luke, co-founder and senior stylist at Sustainable Style Foundation. “We’re especially excited about the upcoming ceremony to be held at the LOHAS 9 Forum as it will bring community organizations, businesses and government together in demonstrating how the expression of individual lifestyle choices can help make positive changes in our world.?
A selection committee made up of accomplished social and environmental leaders will be asked to evaluate the nominees and select a winner in each category based on the following criteria:
- Effective use of popular culture. How effectively nominees use popular culture/media to inspire mainstream consumers to make more sustainable personal lifestyle choices.
- Future innovation. How nominee’s achievement drives further innovation in specific industries or across other design industries.
- Depth of achievement. The significance of the achievement, particularly with respect to available resources or prior achievements of the company or organization.
- Overall impact. The level of interest created and its long-lasting appeal.
In addition to 10 winners that will be announced during the special awards ceremony, three premier award winners will be honored, which include:
Aveda—Vision & Innovation Award
The Vision & Innovation Award recognizes an individual, organization or company that has demonstrated ongoing leadership and vision in a style/design industry. The SSF Board of Directors has selected Aveda to receive SSF’s first Vision & Innovation Award. Since its founding in 1978 by Horst M. Rechelbacher, Aveda has set the standard in the beauty industry, as well as many other industries, on how to infuse both social and environmental responsibility into a company’s culture and core business strategy.
Outstanding Public Expression Award
The Outstanding Public Expression award recognizes efforts by a celebrity, style professional or public figure that uses their high profile position to bring attention to pressing social and/or environmental issues. The SSF Board of Directors is delighted to confer the first Outstanding Public Expression Award to not one, but two individuals, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Perhaps Hollywood’s most conscious couple, Sarandon and Robbins are well known for speaking out on issues ranging from the environment and human rights to politics, AIDS and hunger.
Style & Substance Award The Style & Substance Award is SSF's highest honor and recognizes outstanding efforts by a celebrity, style professional or public figure improving the quality of life for children around the world. Because the late Audrey Hepburn originally inspired the Award as an actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who worked to raise awareness of the plight of children around the world, the SSF Board of Directors has chosen resolutely to present the first Style & Substance Award to Ms. Hepburn through the Audrey Hepburn Children’s fund established in her honor.
The Collage Foundation's Youth Award will also be presented at this year's OSSA ceremony.
The OSSA awards were launched last year at the Gibson Guitar Showroom in Beverly Hills where invited guests gathered to hear the honorable mentions for the first OSSA Event. This year, SSF is pleased to announce LOHAS 9 as the presenting sponsor and host for the 2nd annual Outstanding Sustainable Style Achievement (OSSA) Awards.
“The vision of SSF and LOHAS 9 Forum are very well aligned,? said Brad Warkins of Conscious Media, the company that is producing the LOHAS 9. “Through panel discussions, strategic networking and experiential activities, participants will gain access to business leaders, celebrities and members of the press and learn how to communicate with the growing segments of consumers interested in sustainability. To this end, we believe that SSF’s mission to recognize these efforts through the OSSAs will help bring LOHAS values to the mainstream.?
