[OSSA nomination & selection process]

The nomination and selection processes for the OSSA Awards are designed:

  1. to be simple,
  2. to fairly reflect oustanding efforts underway across the many and diverse style and design industries,
  3. to be highly competitive and
  4. to include a final voting process of the highest respect and integrity for the nominees.

Any current annual member may nominate individuals, companies or organizations for an OSSA Award.

An 'Award Year' consists of January 1 - December 31 of a particular year. Nominations for the Award Year are open through January 15th of the year immediately following the Award Year. For example, the 2005 OSSA Awards will recognize efforts and achievements carried out from January 1 - December 31 of 2004. The nomination process for the 2005 OSSA Awards is open through January 15th of 2005.

Once the nomination process is closed, the SSF board of directors will select the top five nominees in each category and present them to a selection committee made up of objective representatives from nonprofits, foundations and corporations. The selection committee is tasked to evaluate the nominees and select a winner in each category based on four criteria:

  • Effective use of popular culture. How effectively did the nominee use popular culture/media to inspire mainstream consumers to make more sustainable personal lifestyle choices?
  • Future innovation. To what degree will the achievement drive further innovation in nominee's industry and/or across other design industries?
  • Depth of achievement. How 'deep' was the achievement? Particular within companies or organizations, how deep was the achievement with respect to available resources and/or prior achievements of the company or organization?
  • Overall impact. How much buzz/interest did the achievement create in sustainability and will the buzz/interest be longlasting?
Final winners will be held in secret until the evening of the particular year's OSSA Awards event.
