Editor's note...

Isnt summer great? I love what comes to my attention while enjoying a warm day. After pushing through the crowds at SeaFair I made it to Belltown where I found an incredible furniture store that peddles the latest in sustainable goodies: Velocity Art & Design is now a favorite shopping destination. A climb up onto Capitol Hill brought me to Lipstick Traces, recently remodeled and still hip, where I spotted some fantastic artwork. After leaving their space I went up the street and met with the fine ladies at Retail Therapy where I discovered that there are local shopkeepers who actually care about the condition of the same neighborhood they serve. Like I said: I love this stuff!

This month we all are going to be flaunting our style in heat. Are you draped in linen-like hemp shirts and bamboo-fiber garbs? Sean Schmidt keeps strutting around in his new Zegna bamboo sport coat and never fails to let me know how wonderful it is to be in a beautifully made (and totally sustainable) jacket. So, with that in mind I pass on the recommendation to you: if youre in the market to pick up some new clothes, there are many sustainable options available. Check out some of the shops listed below, and if you still want more visit our Seattle Online Sourcebook to track down that piece you never thought would exist in organic cotton.

As always, if you have a question, comment or suggestion for the next stylesheet, or you'd like to become a stylesheet sponsor, we'd love to hear from you. Email us at or give us a ring at 206.324.4850.

Siesta time,

Natural Selections...looking fabulous, living well

  • Velocity Art & Design | Offering Seattle's best selection of top design furniture, art, and accesories. Opened four years ago by husband-and-wife team Lara and John Tusher, Velocity has grown to recieve national publicity for being the place to get rare pieces of design genius. Check out their Offi office furniture made of sustainably harvested wood or the Emeco chairs made with recycled aluminum. 2118 Second Avenue. 206.781.9494
  • Cafe Flora | Since 1991 Cafe Flora has been serving a delicious menu of vegetarian foods. Rich in flavor and wide in scope, their recipes are a tasty indulgence. I recommend the Fennel and Lemon Pepper Polenta with a nice cold local brew. 2901 East Madison Street. 206.325.9100
  • Lipstick Traces | This terribly wonderful shop sits conspicuously on a corner along Pine. Big smacks and lots of pink on the outside - local art and designs inside. Lipstick Traces has been very active in promoting local artists and designers as well as placing sustainably-made goodies on their shelves. A must for any [guy or] gal looking to score a bag that hasn't been bought by every other hipster on the hill. 500 East Pine Street. 206.329.2813
  • Bark Natural Pet Care | No one ever said you had to leave Fido out of the sustainability party. The folks over in Ballard have discovered the secret to making dogs ark with joy: all natural treats, toys, and collars. Swing in and pick up a catnip cigar for kitty or a sweet potato dog chew for old slobbers. 5338 Ballard Avenue. Monday - Friday 11-7; Saturday/Sunday 10-6. 206.633.2275
  • Peter Miller Details | Any fashionable and design-conscious person who wanders into this store will probably have to consciously contain himself from making a scene of outrageous excitement. I am so excited about this shop that I almost slipped an expletive into this blurb. Why am I excited? The first thing I spotted on the shelf was a cornstarch-based spork that is totally biodegradable and seems to only float on the MOMAstore webpage. After that I became so overwhelmed by the bags, bowls, and pillows [Eames dots... I am a sucker for those dots] that I had to run back to the office and write about it! Stop by soon! 1924 First Avenue. 206.448.3436
  • Retail Therapy | For a couple years Retail Therapy has been providing the scattered Pike blocks East of Broadway with some much needed socially conscious high style. Their space is split: half retail goodies, half art gallery. The merchandise is very exciting, never boring, and always unique - emphasizing sustainability. Artwork hung in two different galleries makes for a "more emotional" kind of shopping experience. Walk in looking for lipstick, walk out wanting to make change. Art shows feature nationally recognized artists and photographers; open monthly for the First Thursday Art Walk. 905 E. Pike Street. 206.324.4092

Quick Picks...doing good

  • RE-Sources for Sustainable Communities | For 20 years RE-Sources has been providing Seattleites with good-old tips and tricks for being a good member of our community. • The Vera Project | Here at the ssf* Seattle Chapter office we're looking into all the great music projects that promote positive things, like community and peace. Not surprisingly we found a spectacular one here in the Emerald City! The Vera Project helps young artists get a good start in music and also makes a strong effort to provide youngsters with safe venues for live shows. You can help with donations and manpower. Do it for the kids.
  • The Woodland Park Zoo | Yeah I know you've been to the zoo, but did you know that the Woodland Park Zoo is a 5-star Envirostars business? Envirostars is a nationally recognized certification system that measures the reduction, recycling, and treatment of hazardous waste in business. Our zoo is a top dog in their eyes and a proponent of sustainable business. Surely we would have expected no less, but nevertheless it is summer... so go visit the ZOO!!
  • Pacific Northwest Ballet's Second Stage | Most people don't know it, but the career of a professional ballet dancer starts at age 18, matures in their strapping 20's and tapers to retirement by 30. What then? Second Stage is a career transition program designed to provide dancers with a post-secondary education spread over the course of several years, giving them the security needed for a dramatic career change after ballet. Dancers are gifted with a scholarship that covers expenses while performing on stage. After starting in 1999 the program has grown and can continue to thrive with support from concerned people like you!
  • Organic Wednesdays at Pike Market | Until October 27th every Wednesday at the market is an Organic Wednesday. Come meet the producers of certified organic fruits and vegetables, partake in free tastings, and take advantage of special deals. 10AM to 4PM.

  • August 4 - The Singing Forest | The Intiman Theatre at teh Seattle Center presents a much anticipated performance of Craig Lucas's The Singing Forest. No, not a sappy environmental play - but one that examines our cultures psychology through the lives of a multi-generational family. Go see what unites us.
  • August 13 - Pike Place Market's 97th Birthday Celebration | Go on down to the Pike Market on the thirteenth to get in on the birthday party! From 10AM to 2PM visitors to the "birthday tent" will get a free goodie-bag and a chance to win a $97 market shopping spree.

Annmarie Cammenzine will host a hands-on workshop demonstrating Ayurvedic methods of keeping the skin looking healthy, beautiful, and new. Afterall, a big part of being sustainably stylish is being good to your skin and easy on the Earth!
  • August 13-15 - Seattle Music Fest | This music party on Alki is now in its ninth year and plans to show Seattle a good time, with emerging talent and a good dose of community building. Proceeds benefit Northwest Programs for the Arts, which supports developing music and visual artists from the region.
  • August 28-29 - Tibet Fest | The new and old will meet at Seattle's Tibet Fest. In an effort to continue the preservation of Tibet this free festival will draw interest from around the region. Look for fascinating live shows and high-quality authentic crafts.
