In a joint statement, Pitt and Jolie said, "While we celebrate the joy of the birth of our daughter, we recognize that 2 million babies born every year in the developing world die on the first day of their lives. Roger Ebert on An Inconvenient Truth
June 5, 2006
Roger Ebert reviews An Inconvient Truth, Al Gore's documentary about the perils of climate change that is making a big splash in the move world. What did Ebert think? "In 39 years, I have never written these words in a movie review, but here they are: You owe it to yourself to see this film."
He continues, "If you do not, and you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to." Ebert found the film engaging and fascinating, and it affected him to the point of taking part of his review to go over the things we can all do to help mitigate climate change: "...encourage the development of alternative energy sources: Solar, wind, tidal, and, yes, nuclear. Move quickly toward hybrid and electric cars. Pour money into public transit, and subsidize the fares. Save energy in our houses." He even walked around the house, turning off all the lights, when he got home.

Honda's Green Gifts through June 2006 Include CO2 Offsets
May 31, 2006
In support of World Environment Day (next Monday, June 5!), Honda is giving away some green gifts with each of their cars sold during the month of June. Included in the gift pack are a box of organic Green and Black's chocolates, a 'Greener Driver' car bumper sticker, a booklet on tips to help reduce environmental impact and, perhaps most importantly, a CarbonNeutral certificate confirming the offset of one month's CO2 emissions.
After the first month's CarbonNeutral commitment expires, the new Honda owner will have the opportunity to extend their offsetting of CO2 through CarbonNeutral. John Kingston, Environment Manager at Honda (UK), says, "We're proud to support any event that promotes and educates on green matters, and that's why Honda is backing World Environment Day. The beauty of this Greener Driving offer is that it's not only a gift for the buyer of the Honda – it's a gift for the environment too."

The Tao of Willie: BioWillie on Fresh Air
May 30, 2006
Willie Nelson recently visited Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air program to chat up his new book, The Tao of Willie. While talking about Bob Dylan, writing his first song and "a guide to the happiness in your heart," Willie also got talking about biodiesel.
Willie has been a tireless proponent and even sells his own brand of the alternative fuel. He said the way he was exposed to biodiesel (he hadn't heard of alternative fuel possibilities other than regular petroleum) shows that President Bush's use of the phrase "addicted to oil" is misleading. "I don't think we're addicted, I think that's the only thing we've had," Nelson said.

UK Recording Studio Goes Solar
May 26, 2006
Studio complex The Premises is the first fully professional solar powered recording studio in the UK. Officially opening in June, the studio was built using recycled materials where possible. All equipment, including air conditioning, is extremely energy efficient.
Studio Director Nathan Hale says: "The idea of a solar powered studio has certainly raised a few eyebrows, but it works brilliantly. We’ve been doing dry runs with bands like Bloc Party and the audio quality is phenomenal. These days more and more music artists are thinking about their 'carbon footprint', so it was only a matter of time before a fully fledged eco-studio became a reality."

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival Goes Green in 2006
May 24, 2006
The fabulous Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival has announced a multitude of efforts to make the event as green as possible for 2006. Bonnaroo's greening plan includes using organic cotton and hemp t-shirts, biodegradable concession service items, revolutionary waste management strategies, and cleaner fuel options.
Bonnaroo, taking place this year from June 16-18 in Manchester, Tennessee, is also implementing plans to mitigate its predicted impact on global warming. All of the festival's non-music stage generators will utilize biodiesel fuel, and one such stage (the Solar Stage) will run on solar power alone. In addition, CLIF Bar will purchase renewable wind energy credits from NativeEnergy, offsetting carbon dioxide emissions created by the festival and completely negating Bonnaroo's contribution to global warming.

EPEAT: The New Green Computer Standard
May 22, 2006
Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) is a brand-new standard system for evaluating, certifying and registering green computers and other electronics. Like LEED for green building and Energy Star for appliances, EPEAT provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products.
It also provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products. The rating system evaluates computer and other electronic products according to three tiers of environmental performance -- Bronze, Silver, and Gold. There are 51 total environmental criteria: 23 required and 28 optional criteria, and products earn respective labels for the total number of criteria met. The new standard is designed to encourage manufacturers to design their products to be used longer, be more energy efficient, easier to upgrade and recycle, and contain fewer hazardous materials.
