Call for Entries: The Case for Sustainability
May 18, 2006
The "Case for Sustainability" project is putting together a book of short case studies focusing on the intersection of business, the environment, and innovation, and they want your ideas! Those interested should submit their case studies by June 30, 2006.
As the project document puts it: To the greatest extent possible, the case studies selected for this project will be those appropriate for use not just in elective business courses (focusing on ethics, environmental topics, and social responsibility, for example) but also in core curriculum courses (on management, strategy, marketing, finance, operations, etc.). As such, a key goal is to demonstrate how companies and other organizations are harnessing sustainability as a driver of innovation in a manner that enhances their performance from a long-term financial standpoint, not just as an add-on exercise with little discernable value. The ultimate objective is to create relevant educational materials for use in academic degree programs, executive education programs, and within businesses and other interested organizations.

Does Whole Foods Really Cost More?
May 15, 2006
Whole Foods is on a crusade to convince the public that its prices are not higher than its competitors. They claim that their prices are simply not higher than their competitors, so they're coming out with some funky ads to help foster the image that the market chain is a place where values can be found.
For the next 10 weeks, Whole Foods is running print advertisements in New York City emphasizing "value" and "deals" — two words not generally associated with the chain that inspired the quip "Whole Foods, Whole Paycheck." To see if there is any truth in the advertising, Business Day surveyed the prices of several national brand grocery products at the Whole Foods, Food Emporium, Trader Joe's and Walgreen's near Union Square in Manhattan. In several cases, Whole Foods' prices were, in fact, the lowest. Despite its reputation as a higher-priced alternative, Whole Foods frequently matched the prices at Trader Joe's, which, since it arrived in Union Square in March, has often attracted a line of customers outside its store waiting, up to 20 minutes, to join the line inside.

BMW Opens the World's First Green Paint Shop
May 11, 2006
BMW recently started using recycled methane gas generated by a nearby landfill to provide energy for its paint shop at the manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, SC. The paint shop is estimated to use nearly half of the energy on the assembly line.
The project will save BMW at least $1 million per year, and diverting the gas from landfill will save 17,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, roughly equivalent to driving a car around the world 4,300 times -- more than 100 million miles.

Josh Dorfman of Vivavi: The Sustainable Luxury Myth
May 10, 2006
Josh Dorfman, CEO of Vivavi and Host of The Lazy Environmentalist radio show, has a guest essay at WorldChanging about the myth of "sustainable luxury," or the idea that sustainable goods have to be luxury goods.
He equates the sustainable goods with technology: "Thirty years ago when Bill Gates was tinkering in a garage and Gordon Moore was still refining his law, personal technology devices were a luxury because few could afford the initial prototypes." Now, computers and other consumer electronics are everywhere; he argues that sustainability is headed down the same path. Definitely worth a read.

Organic Cotton Hitting the Mainstream
May 9, 2006
According to a new study by the nonprofit Organic Exchange, the organic cotton market increased exponentially in North America, Europe, and Japan between 2001 and 2005. During those four years, the number of brands and retailers with significant organic cotton programs grew from 5 companies to more than 30.
The estimated global retail sales of organic cotton products more than doubled, from $245 million in 2001 to $583 million in 2005, an annual average growth rate of 35%. By 2008, the market is expected to grow to more than $2.6 billion -- a tenfold increase in just 7 years. Companies like Nike, Patagonia, Bed, Bath & Beyond, IKEA and even Wal-Mart have joined the organic cotton explosion; Wal-Mart has even become largest single purchaser of 100% organic cotton products in the world.

Radiohead Plays Acoustic Set for Environmental Benefit
May 3, 2006
Radiohead played an acoustic set at the Friends of the Earth (FOE) benefit in London earlier this week, using the appearance to debut some new songs.
The concert was held in support of "The Big Ask," an FOE campaign that is calling on the UK government to take action to combat climate change. "The Big Ask" Campaign, which was launched by lead singer Thom Yorke in 2005, is calling on thousands of people across the UK to demand the government take action to tackle climate change. Friends of the Earth is calling for the introduction of new climate change laws which would force the government to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, by 3 per cent every year. photo by Zach Cordner
