Elizabeth Hurley: Queen of Organic Farming
February 28, 2007
Elizabeth Hurley, who stopped acting last year to start up an organic farm, is having so much fun digging in the dirt that, instead of fancy gifts at her upcoming wedding, she wants animals and trees for her farm instead. Her ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant has already sponsored a London Zoo monkey called Elizabeth as a wedding gift.
While the organic status of the farm is not yet certified (a process that can sometimes take a few years), Hurley is still very excited to be involved in the process. "It’s the only place I want to be. When we get our organic status we’re going to farm properly and we’re going to have a herd of cows and proper sheep and proper chickens, and we’re going to have Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs," she said.

February 27, 2007
Small space doesn't have to mean small style, according to Jay Shafer, founder of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, who shows off his 96 square-foot home to Oprah. "This place has more storage per square foot than most houses would," he says.
Jay's main living area is packed full of amenities that make him more comfortable—including a tiny fireplace! Another bonus—his commute from home to office is just inches away. Jay has a desk where he can sit and get his work done. And, if Jay wants to entertain, he says his "great room" fits four people comfortably. Check out a video at Oprah's site.

18seconds.org: Change a Bulb, Change Everything
February 23, 2007
Offering an interactive map that ranks states in the US based on how "enlightened" they are, 18seconds.org encourages everyone to switch to energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs with a little friendly competition from the rest of the country. How enlightened is your state?
So far, over 14 million bulbs have been purchased since the beginning of 2007, which translates into over $414 million in savings on energy bills, the equivalent of taking almost 100,000 cars off the road and saving almost 1.5 billion pounds of coal from being burned, and over 6 billion pounds of CO2 kept out of the atmosphere. So change a bulb; it changes everything.

February 20, 2007
The clock is officially ticking for incandescent bulbs in Australia; they plan to completely phase out the inefficient bulbs by 2010. The decision will make Australia the first country to ban the light bulbs, and could cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tons by 2012.
"If the whole world switches to these bulbs today, we would reduce our consumption of electricity by an amount equal to five times Australia's annual consumption of electricity," said Malcolm Turnbull, the country's environment minister.

Biodiesel: Creating Hope for Greener Cars
February 19, 2007
Biodiesel is making a bigger and bigger impact in the world of sustainable mobility, thanks to an increasing and higher quality supply and the support of high-profile enthusiasts like Daryl Hannah, who are helping to prove that it can really work for anyone driving a diesel car.
From the National Biodiesel Conference, Daryl Hannah said that interest in the fuel had never been higher. Four years ago, she said, the conference "was 400 farmers sitting in a hotel in Palm Springs, and now we’re talking thousands of people and importations from all over the world, just to get a product out on the market."
