Zipcar Brings Carsharing Services to London
November 30, 2006
US-based car-sharing service ZipCar is now available in London. The world's largest car-sharing company is starting their British service with six types of cars to choose from, ranging from Mini Coopers to BMWs and Honda Civic hybrids.
Made possible by £13 million in new funding, the London service starts in Zones 1 and 2 and the Kensington & Chelsea areas and plans to expand to the rest of the city by the end of next year. Members of ZipCar book cars on an as-needed basis and pay rates starting at £4.20 per hour. For that price, you get gas, insurance, maintenance and reserved parking, an extra perk in a city where parking is increasingly difficult and expensive.

On the heels of the release of his greatest-hits album, Moby took time to chat with Grist about his life as a sometimes outspoken vegan and his work with the the many political and social issues he's passionate about.
The liner notes of his album note that, among other things, he thinks our reliance on petroleum is out of hand and that sustainable energy is no longer a hippie idea. His work reaches many difference people and a wide demographic, from animal rights to political activism, and he does it all by using himself as an example. Photo: Danny Clinch

SilverJet: The World's First Carbon-Neutral Airline
November 28, 2006
Silverjet, a brand-new business-class long-haul carrier, is to become the world’s first carbon-neutral airline. Under the plan, Silverjet — a tiny company that has yet to start flights — will include a compulsory carbon charge in its ticket prices.
Passengers will be awarded carbon points for each flight, which can then be used to invest in green projects chosen by the airline. These projects include wind-power generation in India, free light bulbs for poor families in Jamaica, and a program that uses carbon credits to improve energy efficiency on the island.

The Swoosh Making Big Sustainability Strides
November 14, 2006
The Swoosh has been taking some big sustainability steps lately. They made it on EPA's Top 20 Best Workplaces for Commuters from the Fortune 500 Companies list for the third year in a row, and was recently named among the top 10 companies for transparent corporate sustainability reporting.
Nike's commuter program, TRAC (Traveling Responsibly? Accept the Challenge), offers prizes and incentives to commuters who eschew the gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle. Since 1992, it has reduced the percentage of employees who drive alone from 98 percent to 84 percent. Nike was also the first in the sports-apparel industry to disclose the names and locations of contract factories making its products.

Barenaked Ladies, Reverb Featured on Inside Renewable Energy Podcast
November 13, 2006
Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies and Lauren Sullivan, co-founder of Reverb, are featured on the Inside Renewable Energy podcast. They chat about BNL's sustainable fall tour and Reverb's Eco Villages at concerts, which showcase alternative energy and help everyone be a little more sustainable.
Reverb also helps coordinate biodiesel fill-ups for tour buses and renewable possibilities for the merchandise and food sold at concerts. The two are a really good fit; BNL seem to really care about minimizing the bad stuff about concerts and consumerism, and Reverb is there to lend a hand.

Top 100 Eco-Heroes by the UK's Environment Agency
November 8, 2006
The UK's Environment Agency have put together a list of the "Top 100 Eco-Heroes" as voted by their peers. Topping the list are Rachel Carson, E.F Schumacher, and Jonathon Porritt. The inclusion of some lesser-known names is notable.
Aside from some usual suspects like Al Gore & HRH Prince Charles, "some of these people aren’t nearly as well-recognised for their contribution to our planet’s welfare as they should be. We hope this poll will go some way towards putting that right," says Mark Funnell, Managing Editor of Your Environment, the Environment Agency’s quarterly magazine for environmental professionals and consumers.
